All journeys lead somewhere. For our team, the journey started all the way back on a hot summer evening with the players in the football stands all staring at me as I told them how we were going to compete, not just play hard. Our journey started on the hot turf running sprints and working on our core. Shutdown after shutdown, Friday night zoom calls, group chats with pictures of players with head lamps on at 5am, quarantines, schedule changes, and having to listen to me; feels like a year compressed into 3 months. There was a buzz with this group and an energy that was contagious. A genuine love for being around each other, a love for hard work, and a love for competing; A coach's dream! Our season started out 2-3 as I learned the team and the team learned me. The trust grew and next thing you know, these young ladies put together a 10 game winning streak that was incredible to witness. We had our sights set on revenge of our Comstock Park loss and we delivered! We had our work cut out for us in the district final, but we executed the game plan perfectly in the first half. A complete team effort defensively and were the aggressor on offense! All journeys lead somewhere, which means, they eventually end. Our effort and commitment were never in question but Newaygo converted a couple more possessions than we did and our solid decision making became desperation. It's never an easy thing to see the thing you've worked for slip away and I've never coached a team more worthy of accomplishing their goals. Life isn't fair- but I told the girls this in the locker room and it will hold true for the rest of my life: if I had to give up having one of these young ladies on our team, or change the dynamic of our team, in order to win another game, I would lose every time. There is no sacrificing just how special this group of young ladies is and the memories they've created.
To our seniors- I cannot thank you enough for allowing me to be your coach! You have set an incredibly high bar for our program and set an even better example for the players who follow you. Your work ethic and passion carried this team to a 12-4 record and established the standard of what hard work is for teams to come. Kensey, Boo, Britt, and Paige are irreplaceable but I am so excited to see what they can accomplish going forward. They are bright, kind, genuine, confident, and strong young women. We will miss you on the court but we won't have to miss your presence because you are forever a part of this Sparta GBB family.
2021- A year I'll remember for the right reasons.
To the underclassmen - stay hungry and be ready to work, we don't just work hard, we compete!
Thank you to Kelly Rider, Beth, Dylan, all the parents, fans, broadcasters, table workers, administrators, John Peot and Dan Hatchew for doing our book, and my awesome coaches - Jeff, Brooke, Maddie, Kaitlin, Val, Coach Richards, Kevin, Keith, and Mike.
