Jake Couturier 112#, Logan Slominski 130#, Alec Rees 152# and Kaleb Slominski 160# Crowned Regional Champions today at Byron Centers D2 State Qualification Tournament! It’s the 4th State Finals appearance for Couturier and 3rd for Junior Alec Rees!
Luke Aune placed 4th to earn a trip to the State Finals at Ford Field in a week as well.
The most impressive performance of the day came from Junior Justin Postal at 140# who made the finals and punched his ticket as a Regional Runner-Up! Justin has been wrestling since he was 5 years old and has always set his goal to be on the podium at the State Finals! This is Justin’s first trip to the State and he is performing at his best!
The Spartan wrestlers beat Reeth-Puffer in the Regional Semi-Finals 46-28 to advance to the finals and earned a place in the Top 16 teams in the State! It was a bitter sweat finish as the draw poised the Spartans vs the #1 Ranked and Defending State Champions, Lowell and losing by a score of 63-10. The Team finished with a 23-3 Record on the season!
Leading the Spartans on the night in dominate fashion was Senior Jake Couturier at 112# and Freshman Hayden Cook at 119# both going undefeated on the night and primed to continue their momentum this Saturday at Individual Regionals. Couturier is 41-2 on the season with his sights set on a State Championship! “Jake quietly does his job, never complains, no nonesense, hard worker and leads the team with contributing 234 total team points. His style of wrestling is all business when he steps on the mat, a collegiate style wrestler,” says Head Coach Tom Bennett.
The Sparta Varsity Wrestling Team had 8 of its 14 Starters qualify for Individual Regionals and Crowned Two Champions!
Jake Couturier 112# and Alec Rees 152# both won District Titles.
Hayden Cook and Luke Aune finished in fourth while Kaleb Slominski, Logan Slominski, Jon O’Neal and Justin Postal all finished in second.
The Spartan Wrestler we’re rested and ready to showcase their hard work tonight by winning a District Title!
In the semi-finals the Sparta Wrestlers leaned on the strength and depth of it’s line-up leaning on many of its back-ups to defeat Northview 70-11.
In the finals, Sparta defeated Cedar Springs for the third time this season 40-22 and advanced to Regionals next week Wednesday!
In their final home matches of their career, Senior Captains Kaleb Slominski, Jake Couturier and CJ Barrett placed their shoes in the center of the mat tonight after earning a Team District Championship!
The Spartan Wrestling Team complete the regular season as runner-ups in the OK Blue Conference falling to Allendale 235 to 177.5 in the Conference Tournament last night at Coopersville. Comstock Park finished 3rd, Coopersville 4th, Catholic Central 5th, Spring Lake 6th and West Catholic 7th.
The Spartans finished the regular season 5-1 in Conference Duals and 20-2 overall record.
The Spartans claimed 6 champions earning All-Conference honors are Jake Couturier 112#, Hayden Cook 119#, Logan Slominski 130#, Alec Rees 152#, Kaleb Slominski 160# and Jon O’Neal 285#. Five other Spartans reached the podium with Rayana Sahagun 103# placing 4th, Cody Becker 135# 4th, Luke Aune 140# 2nd, Justin Postal 145# 2nd and CJ Barrett 2nd.
This Thursday the Spartans host Team Districts!
After a grueling 6 days of competition...6 weigh-ins in the last 2 weeks, the Mighty Spartans capped it off going 5-0 in the Shelby Super Duals defeating Cedar Springs in the semi-finals and Hart in the finals! Sparta completed the regular season with a 20-2 overall record!
In round one the Spartans defeated a combine team of Shelby/Cedar/Fremont by a score of 71-6 followed by wins over Mason County 66-9 and Kent City 50-19. In the Championship Rounds, Sparta defeated Cedar Springs 43-24 and Hart in the finals 37-31.
Junior Heavyweight Jon O’Neal went undefeated on the day and was the teams MVP!
In the final conference dual of the the season the Spartans won 62-18 over Spring Lake and finish with a 5-1 Conference Record.
In the 2nd Round Sparta beat Godwin Heights 75-3 and improved to 15-2 on the season!
Senior Team Captain, Kaleb Slominski is getting it done in the classroom and on the mat!!
Despite Winning 8 of the 14 Matches, The Spartan Varsity Wrestlers were nudged out of the conference dual meet last night 33-29. Freshman Logan Slominski had a big win in the 130# match to put the Spartans in position to win! The Spartans are still in the hunt for a Conference Championship by claiming a first place finish a week from Friday in the Individual Conference Tournament.
In the second meet of the night, the Spartans shut out Hopkins 74-0 that included Rayana Sahagun’s 6-0 decision over her cousin, Ashtyn Sund in the 103# match! Sund entered the match with a 29-3 record on the season.
Sparta’s Junior Varsity remained unbeaten with a 42-3 win! Dante Wurster improved to 10-0 with a 15-0 victory in his 125# match.
While the Spartans improved to 13-2 on the season, the highlight came with the recognition of its senior leaders Anthony Post, Kaleb Slominski, CJ Barrett, Caleb Barrett, Jake Couturier and Bryce Hillman.

Girls HS Wrestling has seen 8 years of concesutive growth now with over 17,000 participants, 38 Colleges offering Woman’s Wrestling programs, 5 States with Sanction HS Girls programs and in the Olympics for the past 8 years! Sparta is growing as a training grounds for Girl Wrestlers boosting 5 Youth Club Girls, 6 Middle School Wrestlers and 2 on the HS Team! Look for this trend to continue! It was another team effort that helped earn the Sparta Varsity a runner-up finish in the prestigious 20 team 56th Jim Mooney Williamston Classic. The Spartans earned 182.0 points to finish second to #3 Ranked Eaton Rapids with 191 points and ahead of #9 Ranked New Boston Huron 170 points in 3rd and State Ranked Addison #8 who placed 4th.

Sparta Student-Athletes worked hard this past week to maintain focus on their studies while continuing to work hard in the practice rooms and fields of competitions! The Sparta Wrestlers at the tournament this past weekend use time between matches to rest! The life of a student athlete!
The Sparta Wrestling Team will miss Luisa Seckinger! As an exchange student from Germany, Luisa came to Sparta and was looking for a new experience...to try something new in America so she joined the wrestling team! Her positive, upbeat, perpetual optimistic attitude impacted everyone on the team! Having never wrestled before, she made up for lack of experience with an amazing work ethic and never missed a practice and always gave 100%. This Wednesday, Luisa will return to her family in Germany and her Sparta Wrestling Family will miss her dearly!!
Luisa takes with her fond memories on the mat having competed in 9 JV and 7 Varsity for a total of 16 matches...as well as 28 lifelong teammates and 4 coaches and countless other friendships!

Brandon VanDyke 152# placed 6th, Nate Vanocker 103# and Dante Wurster 125# both finished in 5th while Caleb Barrett 140# lead the team with a 4th place finish! Michael Vargas 119#, Kyle Wheater 125#, Josh Molhoek 135#, Anthony Vazquez 152#, Jovanni Juarez 171# and Allen Sied 171# all competed and gained valuable varsity level experience. Dante Wurster was the team MVP marking his second consecutive week of varsity tournament placement as he took 5th last week in the Spartan Invite as well!
Junior 125# Jacob Osmolinski-Stamann is now 22-3 on the season winning his 100th career victory Saturday at Williamston Tournament.
In round one the Spartans Beat Coopersville 68-8 followed by another equally impressive 55-12 win over Belding! The Spartan JV Team also showed its depth winning 35-3. Dante Wurster and Caleb Barrett came up with big individual wins on the night!
The Sparta Varsity Wrestlers dominate the 42nd Annual Spartan Invitational finishing in first place out of 19 teams!
We had 13 wrestlers earn placement points lead by champions Alec Rees, Logan Slominski, Jake Courturier, and Jacob Osmolinski!
Rayana Sahagun, Kaleb Slominski, Anthony Post, Justin Postal, Bailey Troeger, Hayden Cook, Dante Wurster and CJ Barrett also medaled and scored big team points!
Alec Rees remains undefeated at 18-0 and was awarded the tournaments MVP!
In a come from behind battle with conference rivals Comstock Park, the spark needed came from a pair of freshman, Logan Slominski and Hayden Cook. Slominski set the tone leading off the night with a major decision at 135 with 12-4 win over Austin Sanders and Cook came up with a big win by pin over Connor Loftis to give the Spartans the lead and secured the victory 35-29.
In the second round the Spartan Wrestlers defeated Lee HS 81-0.
With 6 starters out of the line-up tonight the Sparta wrestling team showed its depth and team effort winning tonight’s varsity matches 71-6 v Conference opponent West Catholic and 72-6 v Northpointe Christian. The JV line-up won 39-9 as well!
Junior Bailey Troeger (145#) and Senior Anthony Post (285#) won all 5 matches on Saturday at the Wyoming Tournament.
Senior Team Captain Kaleb Slominski has been leading the team and his leadership has transferred over to success in the Family...both Kaleb and his younger brother, Freshman Logan, were crowned Champions at the Grand Haven Tournament today!
The Spartans placed 2nd in a field of 14 solid varsity teams with a close battle for 1st with a State caliber team from Hart!
The team was lead by three champions, Alec Rees, Kaleb Slominski and Logan Slominski.
Jake Couturier, Jacob Osmolinski and Jon O’Neal all were Runner-Ups!
Justin Postal finished in 3rd, Rayana Sahagun 4th and Miguel Vazquez 7th.
Freshman Logan Slominski was the teams MVP!
In a field of 10 varsity teams the Spartans finished in an impressive 3rd place going 4-1 on the day!

It’s bright and early on a Saturday morning and the Spartan Wrestlers are headed out in full force today by entering the entire team in not one but two varsity wrestling tournaments! 14 Wrestlers are headed to Grand Haven and 14 to Wyoming! Seeking out the toughest competition we can find and getting everyone valuable varsity level experience will pay off in the post season say’s Spartans Head Coach, Tim Bennett.

Entering 2018 The Spartans still have a few undefeated records carrying over! Junior 152# Alec Rees and Senior 112# Jake Couturier are both undefeated on the Varsity Level this season at 10-0. Senior 140# Caleb Barrett, Sophomore 125# Dante Wurster and Junior 130# Cody Becker are also undefeated at the JV Level at 8-0, 7-0 and 6-0 respectfully. The team travels to Spring Lake on Wednesday to compete ca Spring Lake and Godwin Heights.
Before heading out on Christmas Break, the Spartan Varsity Wrestling Team traveled to Marquette Challenge which is loaded with several of the the States top ranked teams from all division!
With 10 of the 14 wrestlers placing in the Top 6 in their respective brackets, Sparta showed their toughness by scoring 181.5 team points and earning a Runner-Up finish out of a field of 18 teams and most impressively ahead of D3 #3 Ranked New Lothrup, D4 #5 Ranked Pine River and ahead of D1 Powerhouse Grandville, and only beaten by D2 #3 Ranked Gaylord.

Sophmore Alec Rees won his 3rd Straight Marquette Challenge title while Senior Kaleb Slominski won his 2nd Championship going 4-0 on the day and earning the MVP honors by contributing the most team points!
The Spartan Wrestling Team is off to a strong start to the 2017-18 season! The Varsity is 6-1 and JV is 2-0 in dual meets with a solid runner-up finish at the Tri-County Invite and the Marquette Challenge! Highlights this season so far include Junior Alec Rees winning his 100th Career win joining good company with Senior Team Captain Kaleb Slominski. The team defeated State Ranked Pine River and Places ahead of powerhouses New Lothrup and Grandville at Marquette. The only team loss this season thus far was a close match with Top Ranked Carson-City. Jake Couturier, Alec Rees and Kaleb Slominski were all crowned Marquette Challenge Champions! Junior Heavyweight Jon O’Neal has less the team in points! The JV team has a great deal of depth too this season lead by Nate Vanocker, Dante Wurster, Cody Becker and Caleb Barrett also all undefeated. Key contributions have been recorded by Luisa Seckinger, Michael Vargas, Kyle Wheater, Bryce Hillman, Tony Vazquez, Brandon VanDyke, Jovanni Juarez, Dylan Sied & Allen Sied. The Sied brothers along with Senior Heavyweight Anthony Post have been making a difference on the Varsity las well! The first 3 Saturday’s in January have the team sending out 2 Varsity Squads and will provide yet another challenge to help the team better prepare for the post season! Everyone wrestled great!
